Chulucanas pottery isĀ a type of ceramic art from the town of Chulucanas in northern Peru.Ā The pottery is known for its distinctive black and white designs and is often functional, such as vases or bowls.

Here are some characteristics of Chulucanas pottery:

  • Techniques

  • The pottery is made using techniques developed in pre-Inca times.

  • Materials

  • The main materials used to make Chulucanas pottery are clay, sand, and mango leaves.Ā The clay is extracted from quarries that contain mainly yellow and black clay.

  • Design

  • The pottery is thrown and smoothed by hand, then a white slip is applied to the exterior.Ā The piece is dipped in liquid clay, and the clay is rubbed away to create a design.Ā The piece is then smoked with mango leaves to create a dark black color in the negative space.

  • Finish

  • The piece is fired a second time, and then the hardened liquid clay is carefully removed to reveal the white slip below.Ā The piece is waxed to a smooth finish.
